Dementia and older people community mental health service celebrate official opening of Loxley Centre

Last week, our dementia and older people community mental health service celebrated the official opening of the Loxley Centre in Stratford, a new, fully refurbished centre for outpatient care of older adults with mental illness and dementia.

The service was joined by staff from across CWPT, partner organisations, and voluntary and community organisations involved in supporting older adults and carers to shape the future vision for the Loxley Centre.

Jacky Vincent, Interim Chief Nurse at CWPT, cut the ribbon to officially open the centre.

Why it matters

The new centre offers more clinic space to assess and treat patients, and greater facilities, including a garden and larger rooms for group work.

For many older adults, taking the step from being unwell to engaging in the community can be daunting. The new space will provide opportunities to offer more group work, supporting people to make connections, and transition into life beyond treatment.

The new clinic marks a step forward in our ambition to become a centre of excellence for dementia and older adult care. A new adjoining research clinic will enable us to further contribute to national studies in dementia and advance care.

Sharon Murphy, Head of Service for Dementia and Older Adults, said:

This is an exciting development for older adults across South Warwickshire and beyond, providing a purpose-built space designed to create a more relaxed and welcoming experience when accessing professionals within our service. Our staff have worked incredibly hard to bring this vision to life, and we would also like to thank all our stakeholders who have supported us in making this happen.

We have exciting plans for the future, including research trials, the development of a sensory garden for patients and staff, and opportunities to further shape a service that meets the unique needs of our older adult population, as well as their carers, families and friends.

Thank you to everyone who attended the event, including  the Royal British Legion, VASA, Carers Trust Heart of England, Alzheimer's Society,  Admiral Nurses from Dementia UK, Warwickshire Reminiscence Action Project,  Everyone Active and Compton Verney.
