CWPT’s community eating disorder service for children and young people set to expand

Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust's children and young people's Eating Disorder Service has been awarded funding to deliver a new day service and expand its existing Home Treatment Team.

The two services will bring care closer to home for children and young people with an eating disorder in Coventry and Warwickshire, reducing the need for inpatient hospital admission in line with the NHS 10 Year Plan: from hospital to community.

Together these new services will further increase the specialist and tailored support available within the community, reduce the need for inpatient admission, and help people to recover at home. The funding has been awarded by Toucan, the West Midlands CAMHS Provider Collaborative.

This is the latest investment in CWPT's children and young people's Eating Disorder Service, which has seen rapid expansion over the past 2 years.

Dr Anna Sherratt, Consultant Psychiatrist and Medical Lead for CWPT's children and young people's Eating Disorder Service said:

Not only will these new services mean care is closer to the children, young people, and families we support, but it will also enable us to deliver more intensive care that was previously only available in inpatient services. For families it will enable a smoother journey through our services and shorter hospital stays, so we can get children and young people back home to recover with the support of their parents and families as soon as possible.

Dr Yolanda Juanola, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Lead, said:

These new service developments will provide greater stability for the young people we support, while minimising the disruption that eating disorder treatment can have on their lives. We will also be better able to support parents and families to become more actively involved in treatment and to learn how to support their child at home.
