About us
We support children and young people across Coventry and Warwickshire who are:
- at significant risk of harm to themselves and/or others due to their mental health
- being considered for admission to a mental health inpatient unit
- experiencing acute psychological or emotional distress which is significantly affecting their ability to manage everyday activities, such as attending school or looking after themselves
Our team completes mental health crisis assessments within the community, at a child or young person's home, or within an acute paediatric hospital.
We work with children and young people, their families/carers and other professionals to understand their current needs and risks and develop a safe and appropriate plan of care.
Where appropriate, crisis resolution and home treatment can provide additional support with the aim of helping children and young people remain safely within their community and, where possible, preventing unnecessary hospital admission.
A clinical coordinator is available for professional advice and support between 8am and 8pm, 7 days a week.
Crisis resolution and home treatment
Crisis resolution and home treatment provides additional short-term support for children and young people experiencing significant mental health difficulties.
It may be considered for young people:
- experiencing acute psychiatric or psychological symptoms
- whose mental health is getting worse and are at increased risk of experiencing a mental health crisis
- who may otherwise require admission to a mental health inpatient unit
- who are preparing to return home following a mental health inpatient admission
- who require additional intensive support alongside existing specialist mental health services involvement
Home treatment is considered following a crisis assessment and discussion within the multi-disciplinary team.
Where home treatment is agreed, we will work with the child or young person and their family/carers to develop an individual package of care. Support may be provided at home or another agreed location and will include an individualised care and safety plan.
The frequency and type of support offered will depend on the individual needs of the child or young person.
Day provision
Day provision provides structured daytime crisis support for children and young people aged 13 to 17, alongside support for their families and the wider professional network across Coventry and Warwickshire.
The service aims to:
- support children and young people experiencing a mental health crisis
- reduce avoidable emergency department attendances
- help prevent mental health inpatient admissions where safe and appropriate
- support discharge from mental health inpatient services and acute paediatric wards
- provide therapeutic interventions and structured support during periods of crisis
Day provision currently operates Monday to Friday.
NHS 111 mental health support
If a child or young person is experiencing significant emotional or mental health distress, they can access urgent mental health support by calling NHS 111 and selecting the mental health option.
This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
You can call NHS 111 if you are concerned about changes in your own mental health or the mental health of a child or young person, including:
- feeling overwhelmed by worry, anxiety or fear
- experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicide
- hearing or seeing things that other people do not
- experiencing significant emotional distress
- becoming increasingly withdrawn or struggling to cope with everyday life
A mental health professional will discuss what is happening, provide advice and support, and help identify the most appropriate next steps.
Acute liaison
The Acute Liaison Team provides a mental health crisis response for children and young people presenting to acute hospital services across Coventry and Warwickshire.
The team works alongside acute hospital colleagues to assess the child or young person's mental health needs and risks and contribute to safe care and discharge planning.
Where further mental health support is required following an acute hospital presentation, the team will work with the child or young person, their family/carers and relevant professionals to agree the most appropriate next steps.
Referrals
Children, young people, parents and carers can access urgent mental health support through NHS 111.
Professionals, including health and social care professionals, can refer directly to the Crisis and Home Treatment Team during the team's operational hours.
Following an accepted referral, the team will make contact with the child or young person and/or their family or carer to determine the most appropriate response. Where indicated, this may include arranging a community crisis assessment.
Professionals making a referral should have had recent contact with the child or young person and completed an appropriate assessment of their current mental health needs and risks.
