Sonia Allibone - Assistant Practitioner/ Nurse Apprentice

How long have you been in the NHS?

Coming up to 20 years.

Why did you choose to work in the NHS?

I had previously worked in a residential care setting for adults with learning disabilities and I enjoyed the work. I saw an advertisement for a healthcare assistant in the general hospital and I initially worked in general nursing as an HCA, however, I knew I preferred working with people with learning disabilities.

Describe your role in 100 words.

In my role I care for people with learning disabilities in an inpatient setting, supporting them in all aspects of life skills, daily living skills, and personal care. I promote patient’s individual choices, independence, and I try to fulfil patients’ wellbeing by taking a holistic approach in their treatment and assessment.  I support patients in education, communicating the best way possible with each individual and learning about their likes, dislikes, and preferences.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Knowing I do my best in my job role and gaining job satisfaction from that is what I enjoy about my role. I enjoy helping and caring for people that are distressed, upset, angry, anxious, and confused, and taking an approach that helps you understand. Knowing you are trying to make a difference in their lives is what I enjoy most.
