What IAPT stands for and what we do

IAPT stands for Improving Access to Psychological Therapy and is an NHS service designed to offer short-term psychological therapies (CBT) to people suffering from anxiety, depression and stress. IAPT may also work with people who suffer from panic disorder, simple phobia, OCD or PTSD.

What is CBT

CBT stands for ‘cognitive behavioural therapy’ and is a psychological treatment for both anxiety and depression and there is evidence that it is effective. It is a practical and approach that provides coping strategies. CBT helps people to see how their thoughts affect how they feel and how they behave.

How old do you need to be to access IAPT

IAPT provides therapy for people aged 16 years and older. There is no upper limit to age.

How can I refer myself

You can refer yourself to IAPT by calling 024 7667 1090 and speaking to an IAPT administrator at our telephone and referral centre (TaRC) who will register your details on our system and begin the process of arranging an assessment appointment.

How long does it take to get an appointment

We aim to offer everyone an initial assessment (usually in the form of a telephone assessment) within 14-28 days of you calling the service. Any contact with the service following this will be influenced by the outcome of the assessment call. Some people benefit from ongoing telephone work, others are helped by our courses and groups as well as individual therapy.

How much do the groups and sessions cost

The groups and sessions are free of charge. IAPT is a national programme funded by the NHS and provided within this area by Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership Trust.

Where will I be seen

The location of your sessions with IAPT will vary across Coventry, Warwickshire and Solihull. Some sessions are offered in GP surgeries others in health centres or other suitable public buildings.

Many people opt for telephone work so that the sessions have less impact on child care or work commitments. Our courses and groups can take place in other health buildings, libraries and community centres.

Can I choose the gender of my therapist

Yes. We will be happy to provide a therapist of your chosen gender. We will also attempt to accommodate race, cultural, language specific requests where we are able. This is somewhat dependent upon the staff employed by the service and as staff move on or change, so may the level of provision available.

Courses Available

Sleep Course

Are you sleeping well? If not, you may benefit from our free ‘Sleep Well, Feel Well’ session.‘Sleep Well, Feel Well’ is a free, 2 hour group session, designed to help you tackle many common sleep difficulties. Stress Management Course

This has been one of our most popular services. It is a six session course which runs during the day and in the evening. You can attend the sessions in any order to suit you, as many times as you wish. If you want to learn how to handle common problems like anxiety, depression, low-self confidence, poor sleep and panic attacks, then Stress Management course could be just what you need.

The Stress Management course is a course – not a group therapy – so you don’t have to talk about your problems in front of other people. All you need to do is sit back, listen and learn ways to help control your stress. The courses are always running so you don’t have to wait to start the course. If you want to bring someone with you that is fine. It can be good to have some support and know someone else understands what you are trying to learn.

Below is an outline of what is covered:

1) What is stress management, and controlling physical symptoms
2) Managing physical symptoms
3) Thinking your way out of stress
4) Managing worry and acting your way out of stress
5) Getting out of your comfort zone
6) Maintaining your progress and the future

The courses are available in Nuneaton, Coventry, Leamington Spa, Rugby, Solihull and Stratford upon Avon. Call us on 024 7667 1090 to book an intial assessment, where you can talk about your difficulties with a therapist and come to a shared decision about what type of support would be most helpful for you.

IAPT-RR: Making Improving Access to Psychological Therapies Research Ready

Funded by the West Midlands (South) CLRN and operating in partnership with Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership Trust (CWPT), CWPT IAPT Services and Coventry and Warwickshire Mind, the main aim of the free IAPT-RR service is to provide a comprehensive resource for those undertaking NIHR portfolio research (see NIHR Portfolio link right).

The most important thing that we do is provide rapid access to large numbers of current and former users of IAPT services in Coventry and Warwickshire. Approximately 1,000 people refer to IAPT per month and present with problems such as depression and anxiety and with co-morbid conditions such as diabetes, COPD and stroke. Information on demographics (including employment and accommodation status), presenting problems and co-morbid conditions is stored in IAPTus, a specialist database for use by IAPT services. IAPTus also stores individuals' scores on psychological and lifestyle measures. IAPT-RR can support you in the process of obtaining data stored in IAPTus.

IAPT-RR has strong links with the local research network and together the support we offer starts with help in drafting funding applications, and includes support in obtaining ethics and R&D governance as well as identifying and recruiting research participants. IAPT-RR has Standard Operating Procedures that can be viewed by clicking on the link below.
