Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust has welcomed new figures which show its staff remain vigilant in reporting physical assault on staff.

The full figures are published as part of a national annual survey to establish the scale of assaults against staff working in the NHS; the survey shows that the number of assaults nationally places the Trust in the upper quartile.  Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust, which specialises in mental health, learning disabilities, and community health services has reported the number of assaults per 1,000 staff employed is recorded as 703.

The Trust believes these figures provide assurance that staff are reporting all incidents and demonstrates a positive reporting culture.

The Trust has implemented a number of measures to help protect staff and to achieve a further reduction in the number of physical assaults. The Trust trains all frontline staff in prevention and management of violence according to national standards, and also employs a security management specialist.

Tracey Wrench, Director of Nursing and Quality at the Trust said: “We take physical assaults on staff very seriously, and will continue to work hard to minimise instances of assault

“In the last year there has been an increase in awareness amongst our staff about the importance of reporting physical violence, and the Trust has been encouraging staff to report incidents whenever they take place.

“We will continue to implement measures to protect our staff. In particular, I want to make it clear that none of our staff should feel that incidents should not be reported because violence is ‘just part of the job’.”
