Students from local colleges and sixth forms across Warwickshire and Coventry attended a ‘Careers in Health’ taster day at George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton.

A career marketplace showcased a variety of skills within the NHS and clinical specialisms. Staff from Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust were on hand to talk to students about a range of skills they could consider as a career including: mental health nursing, occupational therapy in mental health, dietetics,  special care dentistry and speech and language therapy. This was a great opportunity for the students to find out what it is like to be a health professional in the NHS.

Students also had the chance to learn about different clinical skills in George Eliot Hospital’s own mock clinical labs and wards; learning about skills such as airway management, external defibrillation and Venepuncture.

The aim of the day was for everyone who attended the event to take away knowledge that would help them make a decision about their future career, whether they want to be a doctor, physiotherapist, nurse or one of the many other careers showcased at the event.

Charlotte Sutton, NHS Work Experience Co-ordinator for Coventry and Warwickshire, said: “This careers fair was a positive way to get local students interested in careers in the NHS. The students were able to see the wide range of careers available and then learn more about how to achieve their goals.”

Schools and colleges that took part on the day included: St Thomas More, Nuneaton; Etone College, Nuneaton; Kenilworth School; North Warwickshire and Hinckley College; Cardinal Newman, Coventry; Rugby School, and; Nicholas Chamberlaine, Bedworth.
