Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust was pleased to welcome Professor Nina Morgan, chief nursing officer for NHS England, Midland’s region, and Lisa March Assistant Director of Nursing & Quality: Specialised Mental Health Services, NHS England, for a tour of Brooklands Hospital, which provides specialist services to adults and children with a learning disability or autistic people. They were joined by Sarah Bloomfield, Director of Quality and Safety for Reach Out, (LDA provider collaborative) and Jamie Soden, Deputy Chief Nurse at Coventry and Warwickshire ICB.

The guests were invited to visit Brooklands following an inspection by the CQC in 2022, which identified several improvements were required. The CQC revisited the hospital in 2023 and found that many of the improvements had been made and spoke positively about the services and staff in relation to the work that has been undertaken.

The visit was opened with presentations from staff and patients which detailed how the services have reduced their use of Long-Term Segregation and about the “Equip” programme, which is soon to be rolled out on Onyx ward and will provide patients with the skills to thrive in the community and avoid reliance on violence to handle difficult situations. Nina and Lisa also heard from two members of the patient council who shared their work in developing a new tuck shop, helping to run a patient Christmas disco and how they plan to hold their first summer fayre later in the year to raise funds for improvements across the hospital site. Following the presentations there was a site tour, where the guests visited wards and spoke with patients and staff.

Nina Morgan, chief nursing officer for NHS England Midland’s region said, “I have first-hand experience of working with Trusts that received a CQC report with lots of areas for improvement and know how hard that can be for staff. I was delighted to see the CQC had identified improvements when they revisited these services in 2023.”

Mary Mumvuri, chief nursing officer, and deputy chief executive officer said, “The huge amount of work undertaken by staff at Brooklands speaks for itself. I am incredibly proud of the work our staff do every day to deliver the very best care for our patients and how passionate they all are about improving the quality of care.

“I am delighted that we were able to show our guests just how much we have been able to achieve over the last few years, to make life changing improvements for our patients.”
