National Smile Month takes place between 17 May – 17 June 2021, and aims to raise awareness of the importance of oral health.

It is important we take care of our oral health as it is a crucial part to our overall physical health and mental wellbeing.

According to statistics from the Oral Health Foundation almost 2 in 5 adults (39%) don’t visit a dentist regularly and over 3 million people suffer from regular oral pain. A lot of good oral hygiene can be practiced at home by following some easy steps and tips.

Here are some top tips for great oral health.

Two minutes twice a day

Brushing for two minutes last thing at night and at one other time during the day with a fluoride toothpaste is key to maintaining good oral health.

Daily brushing is important because it removes plaque.

Floss between your teeth

Studies show that those of us who interdentally clean before brushing are left with a much cleaner mouth than those who did it afterwards.

Using interdental brushes or flossing is a key part of any good oral health routine.

Spit, don’t rinse

After we have brushed our teeth, we should spit out the toothpaste. At this point we might be tempted to rinse our mouth out, but if we do, we’ll be washing away the fluoride which continues to help protect the teeth.

Have regular dental check-ups

Have regular check-ups with your dentist. Don't put off going for a check-up. Detecting problems early can mean they're easier to treat.

Healthy diet

Have a healthy lifestyle, including eating well, not smoking and limiting your alcohol and sugar intake. It's good for your whole body, including your teeth, gums and mouth.
