Mental Health Ward impress peer reviewers

Hearsall Ward staff at the Caludon Centre are in the process of applying for the Royal College of Psychiatrists Quality Network for Inpatient Working Age Mental Health Services (QNWA) national accreditation.  As part of this, they received a peer review to look at the ward with the accreditation in mind.  A peer review team of four members made up of a Consultant Psychiatrist, Ward Manager from a private hospital, patient experience representative and a member of the QNWA team visited the Caludon Centre and spent the day on the ward.  During the day they were shown around the ward by one of our patients to review the environment and then had meetings with the ward’s senior leadership team, staff, patients and carers.

Tracey Franklin, Hearsall Ward Manager, said: “On the day the peer reviewers provided lots of positive feedback and mentioned our Mutual Expectations Mural as part of that.  We also received an email from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, which is lovely recognition and should be shared and celebrated internally.  We often focus on the negatives so showcasing the positives is much needed to boost our staff motivation to continue improving for our patients.”

Nicole McCarthy, Project Officer (QNWA) at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said: “As part of our fortnightly QNWA bulletin, we include examples of good practice from services that have recently had their peer-review visit.  The whole peer-review team were really impressed with the mutual expectations mural, and we would love to mention this in the bulletin.  In fact, both the peer-reviewers said they would take this idea back to their own wards.”
