A new video explaining the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) has been commissioned by the Department of Health.

This came after the House of Lords’ recent conclusion that not enough people were aware of the legislation and protections that the MCA entails.

The MCA consists of five principles:

  1. Always assume a person has capacity
  2. Support people to make their decisions
  3. Unwise decisions do not indicate a lack of capacity
  4. Decisions should be in the person’s best interests
  5. Decisions should aim to be “less restrictive”

Everyone should be aware of the Mental Capacity Act from members of the public to public services, as the protections it provides can affect all of us in one way or another.
