Eleven mental health nursing students from Hong Kong Polytechnic University are gaining valuable work experience during their placements with us.

Working in partnership with Coventry University, we are providing learning opportunities across a variety of in-patient and community mental health settings.

Susan Leonard-Wesson, Learning and Development Facilitator for the Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust said: “The placements have been a positive experience for both staff members and the students who have enjoyed interacting with patients and they in turn have valued their input.”

“This has also provided an opportunity for staff to demonstrate the work they do and develop greater cultural understanding which reflects the diverse nature of the community they serve.”

Chan Kei Tung, aged 22 and from Hong Kong said: “During my placement I have had the opportunity to see staff perform observations with patients and the chance to see examples of patient care plans.

“This experience has provided me with a good understanding of UK practices and procedures and I am really enjoying my time here.”

The initiative is now in its fourth year, with students spending a total of two weeks working within different service areas with dedicated staff members.

Richard Luck, Senior Lecturer in International Learning Development at Coventry University added: “The student placements have allowed all those involved to share experience and knowledge, and compare and contrast the delivery of mental health services from a global perspective.”
