The NHS in Coventry and Warwickshire is encouraging people to get their COVID-19 vaccination so they can enjoy this year’s Lunar New Year celebrations safely.

COVID-19 vaccination sites including the pop-up at Coventry Central Library, are available to ensure everyone who is eligible can grab a jab and top-up their protection this month.

The Lunar New Year is an annual celebration lasting 15 days, this year starting on Sunday 22 January, and marking the Year of the Rabbit. Events are held all over the world as family and friends come together to celebrate and with events planned in Coventry, including at the Lower Precinct shopping centre on Saturday 28 January, the NHS is encouraging people to get vaccinated.

Sharon Binyon, Medical Director for Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust said: “If you are planning to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit by meeting up with friends and loved ones please make sure you do so safely. Our pop-up vaccination site at Coventry Central Library is an easy way for people to drop in and boost their protection. No appointment is necessary so if you are eligible for the COVID-19 booster it’s not too late, you can still get vaccinated at any one of our vaccination sites throughout Coventry and Warwickshire or drop in and see us at our pop-up clinic inside Coventry Central Library.

“COVID-19 is still with us, but the booster offers protection against Omicron variants as well as the original COVID variants and is important because protection from vaccines reduces over time.

“I would encourage everyone aged 50 and over and also those who are under 50 with conditions that put them at greater risk, such as people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women and anyone who has a long-term medical condition such as diabetes, kidney disease or respiratory disease to come forward.”

Offering walk-in appointments (no booking required) for those who are eligible for the booster vaccine, aged 12 and over, the Pop-up COVID-19 vaccination clinics will be at Central Library, Smithford Way, Coventry CV1 1FY on:

  • Wednesday 18, and 25 January - 10am to 4pm
  • Saturday 21 and 28* January - 10am to 4pm
  • Sunday 29 January – 12 noon to 3.30pm

*The vaccination clinic on Saturday 28 January will also be offering first and second vaccines for 5-11-year-olds.

You can also get vaccinated at our dedicated vaccine clinics and many community pharmacies. Find out how to book an appointment at www.nhs.uk/wintervaccinations or by calling 119. Drop-in clinics are also available at https://bit.ly/3yXhepf

In line with JCVI advice, those eligible for an autumn COVID booster this year include:

  • residents in a care home for older adults and staff working in care homes for older adults
  • frontline health and social care workers
  • all adults aged 50 years and over
  • persons aged 5 to 49 years in a clinical risk group, as set out in the Green Book
  • persons aged 5 to 49 years who are household contacts of people with immunosuppression
  • persons aged 16 to 49 years who are carers, as set out in the Green Book.
