Going blue for Mouth Cancer Action month

Coventry Community Dental staff showing their support for Mouth Cancer Action's Blue Wednesday

Mouth Cancer Action month is a charity campaign held during November, which aims to raise awareness of mouth cancer.

Our Oral Health Promotion team has been out and about at a number of public venues in Coventry recently to talk to people about mouth cancer. The team handed out information and advice on the signs and symptoms of mouth cancer as well as stressing the importance of having regular dental check-ups.

Mouth cancers are more common in people over 40, particularly men. However, research has now shown that mouth cancer is becoming more common in younger patients and women. Sadly more than 1,800 people in the UK lose their life to mouth cancer every year, so early detection can be a life saver.

The charity campaign promoted Wednesday 16 November as ‘Blue Wednesday’ to raise both awareness and funds for Mouth Cancer Action. Healthcare professionals across the country took part in a number of fundraising and awareness activities. Andy Law, Head of Planned Care for Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust, bravely joined women from the Community Dental Team in wearing blue lipstick for the day!
