Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust’s (CWPT) Intensive Support Team (IST) forms part of the health and social care system-wide response to help avoid unnecessary admission to specialist hospitals for autistic individuals and those with a learning disability. In addition, the ISTs facilitate discharge from hospital for some individuals, back to their home in the community. The key to the IST’s approach and success is partnering with the person and the family/carers/professionals around them to embed reasonable adjustments and to aid improvements in quality of life.

Now the Intensive Support Team is about to expand from two, to three dedicated teams, to make this an all-age service. As a part of this exciting expansion, new roles have become available in the already-established IST for children with autism and / or a learning disability.

This specialist, multidisciplinary team are looking for experienced, passionate, and dedicated people to join them across a wide range of roles, including two psychologists, a clinical nurse specialist, a lead occupational therapist and a speech and language therapist.

Kami Basra, Team Lead for the Children’s Intensive Support Team said:

“The children’s IST has been established for the past 6 years. In that time, it has been a privilege to support so many children and families and together we really play a key role in preventing avoidable hospital admissions. The impact of that cannot be underestimated.  It’s incredibly rewarding to see the difference we make, and we’re really excited to be expanding and welcoming new professionals in to continue to develop this specialist support.”

Some feedback the children’s IST have received for the families they have supported:

“I’ve learnt more about autism with you guys in the last few weeks than I have in the last few years! It’s really good and I enjoy it.”

“We'd like to say a big thank you to all of you for your really helpful work with xx and us. We all learned a lot about xx and her autism, and our increased understanding has made everyday life so much better for us all, and we're still learning more each day.”
