Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust (CWPT) has released a range of new roles within a brand new service for people with type 1 diabetes and disordered eating. The innovative new offer is part of an ongoing expansion of CWPT’s Eating Disorders Service.

The new roles are being funded by a national pilot overseen by NHS England. Having been chosen in the latest round of bidding for pilot funding, CWPT’s Eating Disorder Service is now advertising new positions, including a consultant diabetologist, diabetes specialist nurse, specialist psychological therapist, clinical psychologist, dietician, service coordinator, and administrator.

The condition, often referred to as T1DE (pronounced ‘tide’) for short and sometimes also called diabulimia, typically involves people with type 1 diabetes restricting their insulin intake to lose weight. This leads to high blood sugar levels and, often, frequent admissions to hospital.

Richard Onyon, Chief Medical Officer at CWPT, said:

“This new service will transform the capacity and quality of care that we can offer to patients with T1DE. We are looking forward to launching the new service, and to achieve this, we clearly need passionate, dedicated people to join us in delivering this exciting new development. There will be roles for professionals from a range of disciplines.”

The multidisciplinary team of professionals will be led by Dr. Tony Winston and based in the Clinic for Eating Disorders and Diabetes.

Dr Tony Winston, Consultant in Eating Disorders and Medical Lead for CWPT’s Eating Disorders Service, said:

“Our new service represents a fantastic opportunity to bring together professionals from mental health and diabetes who are looking for a new challenge and are excited about contributing to an innovative service and improving the lives of our patients with T1DE. We are committed to facilitating flexible working wherever possible and we can also offer training and development opportunities so that our new staff can grow in their role.”

“The posts will initially be fixed-term contracts/ secondment opportunities due to the time-limited funding for the pilot project. However, we hope that the T1DE service will become a permanent part of our Eating Disorders Service so that we can carry on offering this specialist and tailored treatment.”
