A specialist learning disabilities and autism forensic inpatient service is celebrating after being rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Brooklands is a specialised hospital comprising forensic secure wards providing care to autistic adults and children and those with a learning disability, run by Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust (CWPT).

In February 2025, the Hospital received a ‘Good’ rating following unannounced inspections in Autumn 2024.  The CQC rated Brooklands Hospital as ‘Good’ in all areas, including safety; effectiveness; caring; responsiveness; and leadership.

The CQC said in the report that they saw, ‘caring staff taking a person-centred approach, staffing was safe and effective, use of restrictive interventions reduced, and people led active lives. Teams provided a range of care and treatment suitable for the people in the service and in line with best practice and national guidance.”

The report also highlights that the inspectors ‘saw examples of carer engagement initiatives, including the carers’ forum’, and that ‘most people felt they were treated with kindness, compassion and dignity in their day-to-day care and support’. They heard from patients that ‘their individual needs and preferences were understood, and these were reflected in their care, treatment and support’.

Mary Mumvuri, Chief Nursing Officer and Deputy Chief Executive Officer at CWPT, said: “This is great news for Brooklands Hospital secure services. We are delighted that the CQC recognised the significant improvement over the last 3 years and rated our services ‘Good’.

“We would like to take this opportunity to say how proud we are of everyone at Brooklands and of all the work they do.  In 2022 and 2023 the same services were rated ‘Inadequate’ by the CQC following inspections of the services.  It is through the dedication and hard work of our caring staff that have seen this significant improvement over the last three years to improve the quality of care for our patients, and we are very pleased that this has been officially recognised.

“We will continue to work together with our patients and their families and carers to ensure we carry on providing the highest standards of care for those who use our services.”

Mel Coombes MBE, Chief Executive Officer at CWPT added: “We are thrilled to learn that the CQC has rated our specialist forensic inpatient services for autistic people and people with a learning disability at Brooklands Hospital as ‘Good’ in all areas after their most recent inspection. We are particularly pleased to see this recognition that our staff are providing care with people at its heart, to ensure all our patients can lead fulfilling lives when they leave Brooklands.

“I know that everyone involved with the services has worked very hard towards this outcome and would like to thank all those staff for the ongoing dedication and care they put into providing support for their patients every single day.”
