Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust (CWPT) is celebrating Learning Disability Week (16-22 June) by hosting a range of engaging events for patients, carers, and staff across the region. This year's national theme, Do you see me?, focuses on recognising and valuing people with learning disabilities and ensuring they are seen, heard, included, and celebrated for their contributions to society.

Throughout the week, CWPT will spotlight the vital support offered to people with learning disabilities and their families, with activities led by teams across the Trust, including:

  • South Warwickshire Community Learning Disability Team will host a stand at the Central England Rehabilitation Unit (CERU) in Leamington Spa on 17th June, 10am - 12pm and also The Sydni Centre, Leamington Spa on 18th June, 10am - 12pm.  A range of staff will be offering accessible information and resources.
  • Brooklands Bites , a new café at Brooklands Hospital, will be open all week between 10.30am and 2.30pm. Run by patients with learning disabilities and autistic people, the café offers meaningful work experience to support community reintegration. Visitors are welcome to enjoy a variety of snacks, light meals, and drinks.
  • The North Warwickshire Learning Disability Acute Liaison Team will spend two days at George Eliot Hospital engaging with staff on the importance of mental capacity assessments and patient inclusion.
  • A Virtual Pledge Wall will be launched for staff to share their personal commitments to supporting and amplifying the voices of people with learning disabilities.
  • Brooklands Hospital will host a poster competition for patients, with prizes for the most creative entries exploring the Do you see me? theme.
  • The Coventry Community Learning Disability Team will run a Q&A session inspired by The Assembly* , offering patients the opportunity to ask senior leaders the questions about the Trust and their care that they have always wanted to know.
  • A community picnic for staff and patients will take place at Brooklands Hospital, attended by Kyri Gregoriou , CWPT Director of Nursing. The event will include health information stalls, a drawing competition, and resources promoting physical health, hospital passports, and health action plans.

Kyri Gregoriou, Director of Nursing at CWPT , said: "We are really looking forward to this year's Learning Disability Week. It's a time to build stronger connections, recognise the achievements of people with learning disabilities, and support their voices in shaping the care they receive. I am especially excited to attend the Brooklands picnic and hear directly from our patients about what being seen and heard means to them.

As a Trust, we're proud of our teams working across health and social care to ensure people with learning disabilities lead fulfilling, independent lives."

When talking to patients about working in Brooklands Bites, one patient said, "It makes me happy to work in the café, seeing people and serving them. It gets me off the ward and I love doing activities. Another patient said, I don't work there yet, but I would like to. Just because we have learning needs, doesn't mean we can't do it".

We also spoke to patients about the community picnic, one said, "It's exciting and I am looking forward to it while another added, It sounds really good and I hope the royal family visits".
