Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service Rated ‘Good’

Rise, Coventry and Warwickshire’s mental health service for children and young people, has been rated ‘Good’ by government inspectors.

Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors visited the specialist service earlier this year as part of a comprehensive inspection of care provided by Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust.

In the report, they rate the service as ‘Good’ in safety, effectiveness, care, and leadership. However, further work is needed to ensure that the services are more responsive.

Inspectors found that there was an effective patient group run by the service, that the parent groups ran smoothly and that all staff were understanding and welcoming.

Observations of staff interactions with patients and their families found that staff members were responsive, respectful and provided appropriate practical and emotional support.

Staff also encouraged young people to be involved in the recruitment of new staff to the service and in designing the information available to other young people.

The report noted: ‘There was effective working across different pathways within the children’s service in order to meet the individual needs of the young people. Families told us that staff were responsive to the needs of the young people and used a variety of techniques to help support the young people with their treatment.”

Since the inspection, the service has visited College Fresher’s Events across Coventry and Warwickshire to speak to young people and raise awareness of help and support available.

Jed Francique, Associate Director of Operations for Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust, said: “We are extremely pleased with the positive report for our specialist community mental health services for children and young people.”

“Inspectors recognised that our staff members are dedicated and professional, and that our service provides good quality care. We know we need to work with partners to ensure that more people can access the service. However, we have already seen that, with additional resources, we can treat the increasing numbers of young people being referred into the service.”

The report is one of 15 the inspectors have provided concerning services provided by the Trust. Overall, the Trust is rated as ‘requires improvement’.
