Brooklands Inpatients enjoy a great fun day!

On Wednesday 10th July, Thuy Hoang, Occupational Therapist (OT) and Ian Loveridge, ACT manager, along with their colleagues organised a fun day for inpatients at Brooklands Hospital.
The day consisted of a quiet hour from 11am – 12pm, for those patients who may find the main event to be too loud, too busy and too overwhelming. The main event followed from 1pm – 4pm. Both sessions included a hotdog or burger for everyone (staff and patients).
Due to the weather being poor, the fun day was moved into the main hall in the Brian Oliver Building on the site. Set up in the hall were a variety of activities for patients to take part in. Many of the games had been built by patients with Activity Co-ordinators in their woodwork sessions, like the coconut shy, the sitting football game, and shoot and soak. Patients also helped create some of the decorations in their craft sessions.
To celebrate the Euros, a football decorating competition was held across site, all Fun Day participants took part in the poll. First place went to a patient on Malvern unit.
1st – Peppa Pig ball, Malvern unit
2nd – Red ball with flags, Malvern unit
3rd – Bright feathered ball, Eden unit
Thuy said: “I hosted a fun day back in 2019. We thought it would be great to bring patients and staff together to give them the opportunity to experience an event that would typically occur in the local community. Due to the nature of our service, our patients collectively would not access this type of event. So, we brought the fun day to Brooklands. In 2019, the fun day was a big success and I’ve been meaning to host it again. But then Covid happened, and I just haven’t been able to organise another until now.”
“I linked in with the ACT manager to plan the fun day, and from then we enlisted the help of Facilities colleagues to support us to provide hotdogs and burgers to everyone. The ACT team and patients have been busy making the games in woodwork and craft session. Hopefully now we can make the fun day an annual event.”
Well done Thuy, Ian and all the staff who made the fun day a success!
