Baby Loss Awareness Week
Healthcare partners and local charities across Coventry and Warwickshire are coming together to commemorate Baby Loss Awareness Week 2023 by hosting a service at Coventry Cathedral. This event, scheduled for Sunday 15 October 2023 at 2:00pm, is dedicated to anyone who has been affected by pregnancy loss or the loss of a baby.
The event is an informal service open to all who have been affected by the loss of a baby. It will include readings, music, and short talks. Attendees will have the opportunity to light candles in memory of their babies and connect with others who understand the impact of baby loss. The event's duration is approximately 45 minutes, followed by the chance to draw chalk hearts on the floor of the Cathedral Ruins.
This years’ service at Coventry Cathedral focuses on the often hidden grief experienced by bereaved grandparents. Geoff Heaps and Steve Jolliffe, two bereaved grandfathers, will share their experiences, along with a reading by bereaved grandmother Veronica Pope.
A spokesperson for the event said: “We hope our beautiful and uplifting service will help those who have been affected feel more connected and less alone. We want to support families to help to break the silence and talk openly about baby loss.”
Steve Jolliffe shared: “The grief suffered by grandparents when a child dies is complex and we want to offer hope to those who are early on in this journey, that you can learn to enjoy and embrace life again and live with your grief.”
The national Baby Loss Awareness Week, led by Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, in collaboration with over 40 UK charities, aims to provide support and raise awareness. Locally, NHS trusts, groups, and charities across Coventry and Warwickshire have organised events and shared information annually to support local families during this valuable campaign week.
Wave of Light: As Baby Loss Awareness Week concludes, candles will be lit worldwide at 7:00pm to remember babies who left us too soon. Participants are encouraged to post photos of their candles on social media using #WaveOfLight.
