A Parkinson's disease Nurse Specialist cares for patients and their carers who are affected by the condition. They can assist people with Parkinson's disease and their carers, to improve the quality of life by linking them to the appropriate care services and therapies. Parkinson's disease Nurse Specialists can liaise with GPs, consultants and any other health care professional regarding a patient's individual needs.

A Parkinson's disease Nurse Specialist may advise patients on adjustment of medication following discussion with medical colleagues. They provide information on Parkinson's disease and useful networks. They can increase awareness of Parkinson's disease through education and training of fellow professionals.

A Parkinson's disease Nurse Specialist provides a limited telephone helpline and will see patients in nurse-led clinics, unless housebound in which case home visits will be offered. They also work alongside Parkinson's disease consultants in hospital outpatient departments.

They cannot act as an emergency service or adjust medication without permission from the Consultant or GP. They cannot arrange hospital admission or change patient outpatient appointments.
