Psychological Services - Physical Health
We have a team of Clinical Psychologists who provide a service to medical patients of Coventry and North Warwickshire via service level agreements with the local acute hospital trusts - University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire and George Eliot Hospital. Referrals to the service come from clinical teams within those two trusts.
Clinical Psychologists are trained in psychological assessment and intervention, and are also trained to provide consultation, staff training, and carry out research. We also have junior Clinical Psychologists (known as Assistant and Trainee Psychologists) working with us from time to time.
What service do we provide to patients?
We support patients and their carers in coping with physical health conditions. This includes acute trauma, chronic and life limiting illnesses.
We also liaise and maintain close links with professionals from services outside of the general medical field such as mental health and the voluntary sector.
What service do we provide to staff?
We also support other professionals in their work with patients. This includes training, supervision and consultation.
What referral would we consider?
It may be appropriate to consider a referral to psychology, when patients are struggling to adjust to or live with their medical condition, and may be experiencing:
- Medical phobias
- Low mood or depression
- Anger and irritability
- Medically unexplained symptoms
Particular departments may also have specialist needs, such as cognitive assessment and pre-transplant assessments.
