A pilot scheme is being rolled out across Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust in conjunction with Coventry University.

The scheme offers people who are considering a degree in Nursing, leading to professional registration, the opportunity to gain valuable experience for about six months before joining a course in either: Adult, Mental Health or Learning Disability Nursing. This is through paid employment as a Health Care Assistant based in the Coventry region.

Julie Purvis, Acting Lead for Professional Development and Practice Development Lead at Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust, said: “We hope that the scheme will encourage candidates into the NHS, encouraging people from diverse backgrounds with the relevant qualifications to find out if a career in nursing is right for them. The role of Health Care Assistants in mental health, learning disability and adult community nursing roles provides vital experience prior to commencement of  nurse training.

“Pre-degree students currently on the scheme tell us they would recommend it as they benefit from on-the-job training and support, working closely with experienced and qualified members of staff.

“There are also various opportunities to attend training courses and aid other services within the Trust, to allow candidates to acquire a wealth of knowledge and prepare them for their nursing degree.”

If you are thinking of a degree in either Adult, Mental Health or Learning Disability Nursing, come along to Coventry University open day on Saturday 13 June.  Find out more about the open days at www.coventry.ac.uk/study-at-coventry/open-days.
